Follow your passion for public relations

To begin course work in the field of public relations, you initially need to be admitted to Missouri State. Before completing 75 credit hours, you must also be admitted to a degree program.

Being admitted into the public relations degree program signifies that you have completed the necessary requirements for admission and establishes the catalog year for your program. In other words, if changes are made to your major’s requirements after you have been admitted, those changes would not apply to you.

Prior to completing the 59 hours required for admission into the public relations program, you will be a pre-major. Declaring a pre-major early allows you to be assigned a faculty advisor within the department, begin working toward completing the departmental core, properly sequence your courses and connect with the activities and opportunities offered by the communication department.

Admission requirements

  1. Complete a minimum of 59 credit hours.
  2. Complete the General Education Foundations courses.
  3. Have a combined grade point average (Missouri State and transfer) of 2.50 or higher or have a GPA of 2.75 for the last 30 hours of courses completed before applying for admission to the degree program.
  4. Complete COM 115 and COM 209 with a GPA of 2.50 or higher.
  5. Submit application for admission and receive approval by faculty advisor and Head of the Department of Communication.

A student must meet these requirements by the time they have completed 90 hours of courses (Missouri State and transfer) to be admitted to the program. No waiver of these requirements will be granted except that transfer students transferring 90 hours or more will be allowed one semester to complete the departmental core courses after transferring to Missouri State.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants must submit a letter grade for COM 115(3), COM 209(3), and JRN 270(3). A grade point average of 2.50 or higher must be achieved across these 9 hours.

The admission process

To gain full admittance into the public relations program, follow the steps below:

  1. Declare or change your major to public relations by visiting the Academic Advising and Transfer Center, University Hall 109
  2. Meet with your assigned advisor to discuss admission requirements and to develop a plan of study
  3. Complete the program’s admission requirements
  4. Work with the communications department to complete the Application to a Degree Program form to update your record

When you declare your major, you will be listed as a pre-major until you satisfy all admission requirements.
