The communication department offers a number of scholarships specifically for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing communication-related degrees. These scholarships are designed to support your studies at Missouri State and reward excellence – in both the community and the classroom.

Adams Public Service Internship

Selection criteria

Student must obtain a non-paid internship with a non-profit or government organization. Student must submit the required internship application forms.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

William Carrington Memorial Debating Scholarship

Value

Number and value of awards dependent on the availability of funding, but generally awards are for $750 - $1,000.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Applicants are encouraged to submit supplemental materials (prior research, letters of recommendation and a video), particularly if they have not directly worked with the Missouri State debate coaching staff in some context. The complete application is available on the debate website.

Selection criteria

Student must be the best debater of the year.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. Renewal decisions for all debate scholarships are based on student performance, including research productivity, team contributions and competitive success.

Virginia J. Craig Debate Scholarship Endowment

Value

Number and value of awards dependent on the availability of funding, but awards are generally for $1,000.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

Student must show promise for achievement in a prominent national debate program.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. Renewal decisions for all debate scholarships are based on student performance, including research productivity, team contributions and competitive success.

David L. Dollar Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time junior or greater with a major in Public Relations or Communication. Must be a Missouri residents. Must have an overall GPA of 3.25. Preference given based on demonstrated financial need. Scholarship automatically renewed for one additional year as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship may be renewed one (1) time as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress and continues to meet the criteria. If the student should fall below the required GPA or fail to continue to meet criteria, the scholarship will not be renewable.

Russell Keeling Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate with at least 12 hours majoring in the Department of Communication with an overall GPA of 2.5. Must submit a 500-1000 word essay demonstrating commitment to of using one's education for good citizenship. Awards made with regard to financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Richard L. Stovall Graduate Scholarship in Communication

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a graduate student in the Communication Department enrolled in at least 6 hours.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Holt V. Spicer Communications Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time junior or greater majoring in Communications with an overall GPA of 3.0.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Additional information

The application deadline for scholarship applications is March 15. Even though the University deadline for the FAFSA form is March 31, the communication department requests it to be submitted by March 15.

Faculty Scholarship In Communication

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time student that is majoring in the Department of Communication with a cumulative and departmental GPA of 3.0. Must have a letter of recommendation from a Communication Department faculty member, and must have completed at least 30 hours.

Renewal criteria

Preference will be given to new applicants, and the likelihood of review is contingent on availability of funds.

Don and Vicki Stanton Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time junior or senior Communication major with an emphasis in Socio-Political Communication with an overall GPA of 3.0. Preference will be for students with financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Christina S. Drale Graduate Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to graduate student seeking a degree in Communication or Mass Media. Incoming graduates must have an overall GPA of 3.5 for their last 60 hours in undergraduate work. Current graduates must have an overall GPA of 3.5.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Berquist & Bourhis Engaged Scholar Award

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a graduate student in the Department of Communication that demonstrates excellence in their studies and illustrates how teaching, service, and research can support education and the common good. The selected recipient must be actively engaged and involved in applied communication research.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Debate Scholarship

There are currently no requirements for this scholarship other than being a student that is or will be a member of the Debate team.

Roy T. and Mildred Durr Wilcox Scholarship in Communications

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a junior or senior seeking an undergraduate degree in the Communications Department. Award made with regard to financial need. Scholarship automatically renewed for one additional year as long as the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and is enrolled full-time.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. Automatically renewed and can be received for a total of 2 years by an individual student as long as that student maintains a 2.5 GPA and is enrolled full-time.

Dr. Robert K .Gilmore Graduate Scholarship in Communications

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a graduate student seeking a degree in Communications. Award made with regard to financial need. Scholarship automatically renewed for one additional year as long as the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and is enrolled full-time.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. Automatically renewed and can be received for a total of 2 years by an individual student as long as that student maintains a 3.0 GPA and is enrolled full-time.

Chris Sifford Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded to a full-time student (sophomore or above) seeking a degree in either Journalism or in the Communication Department with an overall GPA of 3.0.  Preference given to residents of Boone, Cole, Audrain, Callaway, Moniteau, Cooper, Howard, Randolph, Stoddard, and Greene County in MO.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. The student can receive the scholarship for up to three years.
