Dr. Galanes has been at Missouri State for nearly 23 years and has taught a variety of courses, including small group communication at the undergraduate and graduate levels, undergraduate courses in organizational communication, intercultural communication, leadership, and communication and aging, and graduate courses in quantitative research methods, applied communication research, and research designs.

She became a nontraditional graduate student after having spent 13 years in university administration (including as a residence hall director, academic adviser, career counselor, public relations officer and director of the continuing education program). Small group communication became her specialty area in graduate school and she is the co-author of two textbooks about small groups. She also is co-editor, with Dr. Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz, of Socially Constructing Communication.

She is particularly interested in applied research and her graduate classes have participated in a number of projects to benefit community organizations, including Springfield Public Schools, Springfield News-Leader, Community Foundation of the Ozarks, and the Partnership for Sustainability. Her research area also involves leadership, particularly collaborative leadership in groups and organizations.

Dr. Galanes has also had an administrative career. She was Missouri State’s first director of the Citizenship and Service Learning program and served as an acting department head for three years and acting dean for one year.
