COM's Academic Advising

Do you need to find out who your advisor is?
Log onto My.MissouriState.edu; then navigate to the Academics tab.  On this page you can find out who your advisor is, with a link to email your advisor, what your student id (M#) is, what your major/minor is, what your degree is, and where you can review your advising notes and releases.

Do you need to be assigned an advisor?
Please contact the Academic Advisement Center or the Department of Communication office (Craig Hall 375, Tel: 417-836-4423). The Department secretary can help get an advisor assigned, and you may always speak with the Department Head, Dr. Kelly Wood, if you have questions.

Are you a new transfer student?
If you are a new transfer student, the links below will help, but also contact the Communication Department directly and make an appointment with the department head. Call our Administrative Assistant, Karen Sikes: 417-836-4423 or KarenSikes@missouristate.edu to make an appointment.

Need help with re-evaluating how your COM classes transferred?
You should contact the Communication Department (417-836-4423) to find out the procedure for getting a transfer course re-evaluated. In all cases we require a complete catalog description of the course first. In most cases, especially regarding the general education public speaking course, a copy of the syllabus for the course you took is required. Once those materials are reviewed, the Department Head will contact you directly with the decision.

If you have concerns about how certain classes were evaluated when you enrolled in Missouri State University, you should contact the department office directly at 417-836-4423.

Are you an evening student?
The department offers "after hours" advising help on Tuesdays, 5:00-6:15pm.  Please go to Craig Hall Room 375 for information on which advisor is available that day. The office will either be open or will have a note on the door identifying where to meet with an advisor.

You can call the office during the day to set up an appointment with the "after hours" advisor for that evening at 417-836-4423.

If you would like to meet with an advisor on any other day after 5pm, please send an email to your faculty advisor to set up an appointment first. You can find the email addresses of your advisor on our website at:  http://communication.missouristate.edu/people.htm.  Also, at any time, you may contact the department  (417-836-4423) to set up a meeting with the Department Head.

Do you need to make an appointment with your advisor?
Refer to the list of our faculty to contact your advisor directly either by phone or by email.

Do you want to know what classes are required for your degree program?
You may locate sample four-year degree plans for each major in the Communication Department on our website at: http://communication.missouristate.edu

Degree plans can be downloaded and printed out to assist you in deciding what classes to enroll in or talk to your advisor about. However, you should be aware that your general education degree requirements are found in the university catalog.  Degree requirements that affect you are reflected in the catalog when you first attend the university. Your major requirements are "locked in" from the catalog in force during the semester that you are admitted to your degree program.

Are you having trouble contacting your advisor?
Please allow time for your advisor to get back to you. Some faculty are not on campus every day. In most cases you can expect a reply within 48 hours. If you have waited a reasonable amount of time and are still having trouble getting hold of your advisor, please contact the Department of Communication (Craig 375) at 417-836-4423.
