Research and professional interests

Dr. Jake Simmons is an associate dean of the Judith Enyeart Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities at Missouri State University and professor of communication. Dr. Simmons maintains an active national research and service profile. Currently, his research focuses on communication theory in aesthetic and everyday contexts, ontological perspectives in the posthumanities and new materialism, and intercultural communication in university contexts.

Dr. Simmons has published articles in Text and Performance Quarterly, Departures in Critical Qualitative Research, Communication Education, The Sage Handbook of Autoethnography, Cultural Studies <--> Critical Methodologies,Communication Teacher, Technocultures, The National Forensics Journal, Communication Currents, and The Sage Encyclopedia of Social Movements.

He is the author of Research Methods in Performance Studies and two editions of Intercultural Communication in Your Life.  In addition to his research, Dr. Simmons is passionate about facilitating spaces through which colleagues may contribute to emerging trends within the field of communication. He serves as editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed national journal Text and Performance Quarterly (2021-2024).

Dr. Simmons has held several leadership positions including associate dean, assistant department head, director of graduate studies, provost’s fellow for graduate student success.
